My traveling porcelain is finally back home! I participated in a design exhibition that started at the Dutch Design Week 2011 in Eindhoven and traveled afterwards to Milan, Paris and Russia.
Now, after two years my work is back home and... I will sell these one of a kind pieces on the Sunday Market next weekend (august 4) in Amsterdam!

----------

Mijn reizende porselein is weer thuis!

Free friday - screen printing at home tutorial

I've been trying to figure out an easy, not-to-technical way to screenprint at home. With helpful thoughts of the kind man at art supplies shop Levant in Amsterdam, I came up with a doable technique you do not need too expensive material and exposure machines for and I'm sharing it with you!

Materials:
+ screen (see this previous screen printing post on how I made my own screens).
+ your design drawn on paper or a computer print of your design
+ masking tape (the paper kind you use when painting walls)
+ very fine paintbrush
+ photo emulsion for screenprinting
+ screen filler for screen printing (waterbased)
+ screenprinting ink (for fabric, I use this for both fabric- and paper printing)
+ squeegee
The last four items are available at a good art supplies shop or online.

1.
Stick your design onto the back of your screen with the right side forward using masking tape.

2.
Cover every black bit (the parts you want to print) with screen filler using a very fine brush. You can apply the screen filler quite thick (it should be bright blue), let it dry.

3.
Put a decent amount of photo emulsion onto the full with of the front top of your screen and pull it over your screen using a squeegee. Pull the rest of the emulsion again in the other direction. This way your screen should be covered with a even layer of emulsion (rest emulsion can go back into the jar and wipe the edged of your screen). Place your screen in daylight to expose. It's ready when the emulsion has changed color (mine went greyish brown). Keep an eye on it though, it can go very quick when the sun is shining! It should take about 5-30minutes, depending on the amount of light. If the screen has not fully dried yet but has been exposed long enough, let it dry in a dark cabinet or pantry.

4.
When it has fully dried, put it in the sink and rinse it with hot water. You can use a brush to wash out the blue screen filler. Let your screen dry.

5.
Now if you need to retouch some bits of your design, apply some photo emulsion with a fine brush to the screen. Let it fully dry in daylight again (you do not have to watch the time this time).

6.Tape the edges of your screen with masking tape and apply small cardboard pieces to the four corners.

7. Lay out the item you want to print (in this case a t-shirt, with card board inside to prevent ink from getting through to the back of the shirt. Also iron the shirt before, I forgot to do this and it's much easier when the fabric is not wrinkled!). Put your screen on top of it and pour your ink on the full with of the top part (make sure it's only on that part of your screen that is covered with emulsion).

8. Now tilt your screen and pull the ink gently over to the bottom with your squeegee and the same way back.

9. Lower your screen onto the fabric, hold it tight and pull the squeegee to the bottom, holding it in about a 45 angle towards you, pressing firmly (but not to much, this is something you need to practice a bit).

10. Lift your screen from the fabric and pull the squeegee and ink back to the top.

11. This way you can print a whole bunch of t-shirts, posters, etc. Make sure that when you're done, you wash out your screen immediately before the ink dries (leftover ink can be put back into a jar for later  use). That's it!

10.

Animal illustrations from Pinterest

Every now and then when adding new finds to my pinterest boards I browse through my previous ones. I noticed a period of 'animal collection', especially illustrations of animals. Here from top to bottom beautiful animals:
+ pigeon by azumimushi.com and rabbit by www.jackowska.ch
+ cat by Jozef Wilkon
+ animal garden by marisaseguin.com

Today, I made myself two screens for screenprinting. I ordered mesh at www.thuiszeefdrukken.nl and put it onto two Ikea A4 wooden frames using a staple gun and duct tape, easy peasy!
The plan is to print new onesies with sea-themed designs for the etsy shop. More later...

----------

Free friday - DIY dress tutorial

Hurray it's summer! What better way to celebrate than with a free DIY summer dress tutorial? It took me only one morning to make and the dress is suitable for the pregnant AND non-pregnant among you (no belly-discrimination ;-) )!

materials you need:
- 1 m / 1 yard of jersey fabric: I made my dress just below the knee (I'm 1.70 tall), if you want a longer dress, use a longer piece of fabric.
- sewing machine (a lockmachine is easiest for jersey but a normal machine will do as well)
- sewing thread

1.
Choose a simple dress from your closet from about the same material. Put the dress onto the fabric (fabric is double folded) and cut around it, excluding the straps/ sleeves. You now have a rectangular shape.
Also cut from the remaining fabric:
2 straps, both 10 cm wide, 50 cm long
1 ribbon, 2.5 cm wide, 70 cm long
2 ribbons with on one side a triangular cut (see photo 5A), 2,5 cm wide, 8 cm long

2.
Now make the back 10 cm smaller by folding it back (see third photo) and cut the edge about 4 cm lower (making a small arch, this is to make the back a bit lower than the front).

3.
Turn the dress around and determine the middle of the front of the dress. String little pleads on the top front edge from 3 cm from the middle till 5 cm from the side, on both sides of the middle. Fold the front part of the dress vertically through the middle. Sew the side seems together.

4.
Put the two ribbons with triangular cut on top op each other and sew the triangular bits together. Now fold the ribbon horizontally (see photo 5B). Fold it vertically and put it onto the front top part of the dress. Cut along the ribbon (see photo 5C). Now sew the ribbon into the triangular cut and the long ribbon around the top edge of the dress (excluding the pleaded bits, see photo 5D).

5. Sew the short side of the straps onto the pleaded bits (photo 6).

6. Twist the straps a couple of times (I did this 6 times per strap). Adjust them to the back of the dress, each about 5 cm from the side (they will overlap a bit in the middle). You might have to try the dress on at this point to make sure the straps are the right length. Sew the straps onto the back.

7. Wear the dress with a nice belt or ribbon around the waist and you'll be at your summer best!

Lieve Nederlandse lezer:

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

It's such a shame I hadn't been to to new Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam yet, therefor me and friend E went a week or so ago.

And how was it, you may ask?
Well let's start with the good: The way the architecture is combined with the art is amazing, the old features with modern art, great! I also enjoyed the Jo Baer exhibition, very sensitive collages/ paintings.
And the bad? To start with: if you do not have a museum card (or another discount card) entrance will cost you 15,- euro. We kept looking for more exhibitions ('is this all?, no it can't be, there must be another wing.') a bit expensive for what you get. (Or am I still used to the subsidized days?)

Back in the days the Stedelijk was my fave museum. I remember an impressive Bill Viola Exhibition in 1998, but now... I don't know, I wasn't that excited. Another big dissapointment (yes, I do have high expectations) was the museum shop's illustration art book collection, it was (almost) nowhere to be found, why!?

All together it was nice to visit again but for next time I'm waiting for a more exciting exhibition to come along.

-----------

Under the weather, in a tree

I'm a bit under the weather the past two days... so my routine is: sleeping, etsy orders, sleeping, and hanging on the sofa. While doing the last I've been witness of a little drama here in our town. Parrot Billy (of one of our neighbors) has escaped and now holds residence in a high tree just in front of our house. Whole day long (and the day before) his owners (and about everyone who walkes by, seriously I expect someone to bring soup and sandwiches soon for the parrot people) have been posting under the tree with food, his fave toy and soothing words. So far no good... Billy is staying put. I'll keep you posted... gosh, how exciting can your life be ;-)

Update: Billy is safe back home! He was lured out of the tree by a fake cuddly parrot (he might have thought it was a attractive female?).
Unfortunately I'm still stuck to my bed... hope that gets solved soon too!

-----------

Update: Billy is veilig terug thuis!

New screenprinted postcards!

Since last weekend you can find a whole new item in my shop! Vintage postcards, reprinted (by screen print) with my illustrations!

How did I come up with this idea? I got super inspired by the screenprint workshop I did (by Femke Veltkamp) at Urlaub and when finding a whole bunch of vintage cards in a drawer I got right to it!

The cards date from the 1920-1940 and show scenes of Europe, Algeria and India. I handprinted them all myself so you'll always have a one of a kind! You can find them in my Etsy shop.

----------

Free friday - 5 tips to personalize your mail

Do you have a webshop? Then you have to deal with shipping your orders, right? Envelopes with logo's, thank you cards and wrapping can get quite expensive. Here's 5 tips to send out great personalized packages and mail without robbing your bank account!

1.
Have a stamp made of your logo (I had mine made at www.stempels.nl). You can personalize your envelopes and cards by stamping your logo on it (I also add little details with a pink marker, to make it extra pretty). Saves you loads on printing costs.
Use kid's letter stamps for your address labels. I found a great typesetting set in a thrift store for a few euro's and use it to stamp the back of my envelopes with my return address. The good thing is that you can change it as often as you like (all letters are seperate litlle blocks that you shove into a holder). This way you don't have to buy a new stamp every time you move studio or house.

2.
Design your shop's business card for multi purpose use. Mine have my logo printed on the top. This way there's enough space to add a personal note and also use them as thank-you-for-buying-at-my-shop!-cards. The back is printed in a black and white design, this can save costs too (instead of full color). Look out for discounts on business card at your local (or online) printshop. Found one? Order a big stock!

3.
Wrapping paper comes in different prices. When going for a not too expensive but stylish option I love kraft paper. It's a great neutral canvas for your creative wrapping ideas. I like making characters out of my little packages but anything is possible, go wild!
Another pretty option are old magazine pages (like the black and white one in the first picture).

4.
Use sewing thread for that nice extra pretty package feel. No need for fancy ribbons or expensive twine. Thread comes is all colors you can image and I bet your mother or grandmother has a whole bunch in stock.

5.
Reuse boxes, envelopes and wrapping material your own mail orders arrive in. When sending them out again, cover the address with a pretty paper with your stamp and the clients address on it. No one will know it was reused.
I also get lots of my boxes (when shipping out porcelain orders) from our local whole food store. You just have to ask, they'll be happy to help you, otherwise they will just throw all that great and free box material away!

happy weekend!

----------

Eentje gevonden? Bestel meteen een groooot aantal!

3.
Inpakpapier komt in verschillende prijsklasses.

fijn weekend!

Have you heard of Synchroonkijken (sorry, this is for dutchies) by Else Kramer? It's a project about photographing and looking at things in new ways. It started on monday and every day, for a week, a new assignment pops up in my mailbox. Today the assignment is: 'look at blue'.
Having so much fun doing this!

Screen printing workshop at Urlaub

On saturday I went to Utrecht, more specific: to Urlaub, to join a screen printing workshop by Femke of Windstilte. Femke showed us how to print in an easy, fun and quick way.
I had screen printed before but with big screens, light sensitive emulsion and all that complicated prof stuff but this new way is much easier (and very important: doable at home)!
My fellow students made beautiful prints with lemons, boats, art deco horses and more. I had a little italian pasta theme going on and printed farfalle and macaroni's onto my fabric. ;-)

Want to do this too (or another fun workshop at Urlaub)? See the Urlaub website for more info.

----------
